Ford . How to Take Out the Bulbs of the Third Brake Light on a Toyota CorollaThe high-mounted third brake light on a Toyota Corolla indicates when the brake pedal is depressed and the vehicle is slowing. This is the only dedicated brake light on the car, and if it goes out, you could be pulled over for having a busted taillight. These indicators use traditional incandescent bulbs, which are cheap to replace. Removing the bulbs should take about five minutes. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Things You'll Need 1/4-inch ratchet and socket set Step by Step : 1 Sit in the backseat and face the rear window. Lift the plastic cover going around the third brake light and remove it from the panel. 2 Locate the two screws at the base of the third brake light. Unscrew these from the rear deck, using the 1/4-inch ratchet and socket. Lift the panel up and out of the rear deck. 3 Twist the brake light bulb counterclockwise out of the housing, using your hands. Pull the old bulb straight out of the housing.
Ford . How to Repair Brake Lights on a 1990 Toyota CorollaThe brake lights in your 1990 Toyota Corolla use a very common 1157 bulb in a plastic assembly. The most common problem when a brake light stops working in these cars is a burned out or broken bulb. The first step in repairing a non-functioning brake light is to change the bulbs in the assembly, making sure that they are installing properly and tight. The 1157 bulb is found at any auto parts store, major department stores with automotive departments and many service stations. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Phillips screwdriver Step by Step : 1 Open the trunk of your Toyota Corolla and pull back the carpeting on either side of the trunk opening, exposing the back of the taillight assembly underneath. Loosen the taillight retaining nuts on the back of the taillight assembly with your fingers. 2 There are four cover clips on the rear cover where the bulbs are. Remove the cover clips by turning them counterclockwise with a Phillips screwdriver. 3 Locate the wiring harness connector on the cover. Push the locking tab in and pull the connector out of the back of the cover. Remove the cover from the back of the taillight assembly to expose the bulbs inside. 4 Locate the bulbs inside the cover and push in on the defective bulb. Rotate it counterclockwise and remove it from the bulb socket. Discard the defective bulb. Install a new bulb into the bulb socket, turning it clockwise to lock it in place. 5 Position the cover on the rear of the taillight assembly and install the cover clips. Turn the clips clockwise with a Phillips screwdriver to secure the cover. Install the wiring harness connector into the socket on the back of the cover, pushing it in until the locking tab engages and the plug is secure. 6 Tighten the taillight retaining nuts by hand, then replace the carpeting over the taillight assembly. If you have a bulb that is not functioning on the opposite light, repeat the process. Test the lights by turning the headlight switch on. Visually check the taillight to see that it is working, then have someone depress the brake pedal while you verify that the brake light is working. HovO Often llou Should Change \lour OH Dirty oil just doesn't do the job as well as fresh oil does. The additives boil out, contaminants form in the crankcase and eat metal parts, and water collects over time and forms sludge. The oil holds more and more abrasive particles of metal suspended in it, and these particles wear away the parts of the engine that the oil is supposed to protect. That's why you want to change your oil at regular, reasonable intervals. But what is a reasonable amount of time — or mileage — between oil changes? All oil looks pretty black within a couple of days after an oil change, so the only way to avoid running on oil that's so dirty that it becomes a liability is to keep a record of when it was last changed and to change it frequently — as often as every 1,000 miles, if necessary. By changing your oil frequently, you may get twice the mileage out of an otherwise good engine. Some manufacturers suggest that oil be changed every 7,500 miles or more, but they're the people who get to sell you a new car if your old one wears out prematurely. Although new vehicles can run longer on the same oil than older ones, to be on the safe side, I change oil every 3,000 miles or every three months, whichever comes first. If you're a freeway driver who goes on a lot of long journeys at high speeds, you can probably extend the oil change interval, but I wouldn't go longer than 5,000 miles between changes. If you do a lot of stop-and-go driving in city or rush-hour traffic, change your oil as often as every 1,000 miles. Your engine rarely gets hot enough to evaporate the water that forms in the crankcase and builds up sludge in the engine. Chapter 15: Changing Your Oil Ford . So if you make a lot of short trips each day and leave the car parked long enough to have your engine cool down between them, you may want to take this into considera tion when you're deciding how often to change your oil.
